I have created a Yahoo! Photo Album, similar to the one I have for Parthenope, that will be made public and show from start to finish once this is completed.

archive - Half-Elven

started 2/12/05

3/7/05: All the dark bits are grouted... colors used were charcoal for the mane, tail, ears and muzzle and a 3:1 mix of delorian grey to charcoal for the areas that contain the grey bits and the iridescent red and white gold headstall. Muting the charcoal just a bit created a softer blend for the greys. This mix was the color I had blended for the grout test to oppose the quarry red when I was looking for the optimum color with which to grout 'Parthenope's' dress. I keep grout tests around - I have a board that I have dedicated to that purpose and write the formula on there for future use.

3/4/05: Masking has started, you can see the upper part of the tail to the left. Grouting of the dark bits will be done this weekend, then I can apply his star and fill in with the pony skin tile. Once I get to the level of the breastcollar I will finish that and then move down and do the same procedure - dark, shading bits first on the legs.

3/2/05: Almost all the dark bits above the breastcollar are done - but I need to finish the line of his jaw and put his tail on :) the lined bit left of the purple.... then I will grout the upper dark bits.

2/27/05: Forelock is done...

2/25/05: Three colors of grey - innermost to the middle compliments the skin color. Headstall is finished - red iridescent and gold smalti.

2/23/05: The 'pony-skin' tile came in but I found I was choking on the shading.. so I dug out my acrylic paints and went back to my roots. The shading colors match the unglazed tile I will be using - except for the white.
The pony-skin tile is a grey-white with flecks - so the white is misleading - but it gives me what I need and that's what counts. The tile will give a 'flea-bitten' look which is common to Arabs and Arabs have black skin that shows when they are sweating, so this is pretty accurate. Still working on it though, then it needs to be sealed.

The white over the shading is for his headstall... no bit, Elves don't need no stinking bits to control their horses... :)

2/12/05: First item applied was the ring, Vilya... cobalt blue faceted German crystal. In the photo you can see it top right. White is the paint I applied prior to sealing the substrate in order for the blue to showoff it's color better.Princely horse furniture.... The centerpiece of the Mameluck-style breastcollar [it is an Arab after all] is made of round german crystals with 18KT gold leaf applied, large one in the center is unfaceted. The rest is gold smalti.

In the beginning, there was imagination.
Everyone gets a different 'minds-eye' vision of what they read, and since I grew up with SF/Fantasy...

The photo at the very top is my vision of the half-elven lord Elrond on horseback as per the writing of Tolkien as he is on the way to the Grey Havens - the prelim is drawn on the substrate... I can't paint it the way I want it so I decided to mosaic it instead.

I like the Lyric unglazed so much that I used on 'Parthenope' that I am debating using that for his face and hands... other option is stained glass which I bought for the purpose last year. Will have to see.

I used to own and show Arabian horses... and I think they would be perfect for half-elven princes. The 'pony' will be unglazed Matrixcolor tile if what I ordered looks right.
